Summary
This podcast discusses the failures of “Eli the Computer Guy” the Repair Shop. Eli discusses; why making employees salaried positions was a poor idea, that clients ask for work to be done even when they have no idea how they will pay for it, that you should never overlook ROI for your own business, the insipid effects of sugar intolerance, and waking up to realize that the business that you have worked so hard on… kinda sucks.
15 Minutes of Paparazzi

Summary
Andy Warhol predicted that we would all one day get our 15 minutes of fame. He neglected to mention the 15 minutes of paparazzi that goes with it.
In the modern world I believe that all professionals planning to make over $50K per year should publish their ideas, thoughts and concepts in blogs, podcasts and web videos to demonstrate to potential clients and employers their skills. The side effect of this is that some people will watch, listen or read so much of you work that they will feel that they have a personal connection with you even though you have never met.
Web publishing allows your voice to be heard by those that care which may lead to unexpected consequences.

This tale follows Eli from a $300 per month rented room drinking Vodka from gallon jugs to 8 full time employees and only the finest in German Beer. In the end there was not one single thing to blame for the downfall, just a steady patter of rain and an ever rising tide.

Summary
In this podcast I discuss why Hosted Solutions are many times more cost effective then seemingly cheaper do it yourself options. We discuss determining TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) for solutions/ services, security and uptime, and migrating out of a hosted solution that you have been using. I discuss the reasoning for EverymanIT.com migrating to WP Engine which will cost $50 per month to host our WordPress site vs. going with a $4 per month shared hosting plan.

Glenn Beck Poops Gold

Summary
Glenn Beck makes millions of dollars a year by simply saying his opinions on the radio and TV. Too many technology consultants are afraid to charge their clients what they could because they don’t feel their services are worth it. I argue that if Glenn Beck can make millions for spouting hot air, you should be able to good money by providing products and services that actually do something.

Summary
Bosses, business owners, politicians and celebrities are people too. Many people think that just because a person has done well in life that normal rules for civility no longer matter. By treating everyone with common decency, and arguing about problems vs. about people you maintain the dialogue and increase the chances that everyone will reach a happy outcome.

Everyman IT June 27, 2010 – Eat Grass
There are times to pray, and times to work. Prayer doesn’t pay the mortgage, but hard work will.
PERSON
Actually it’s paid hard work that helps pay the mortgage – to generalise and say “hard work” is both naive and incorrect. My advice is that you really think about what you post, maybe employ a PR agent, so as to prevent you looking foolish and in doing so alienate a potential customer.

Did you listen to the podcast..?
PERSON
Did you read what I wrote in response to what you wrote? Whether I listened to your podcast or not is irrelevant – those that your words alienated wouldn’t have bothered either.
Everyman IT
Ah well… I’m not worried about it…
PERSON
many failed arrogant business men have the same attitude. All I did was offer a word to the wise (sic) which was suitably dismissed, obviously you know best.
I heard that the word humility can be used quite successfully.
Everyman IT
Dude… with the little compassion for you that is left in my heart please let me ask you to sit down, drink a couple of beers and have a chill pill… Nothing I have said in any of this has been other then reasonable. For this you have called me “naive”, “foolish”, and “arrogant”. If this is how you respond to someone basically saying “There’s time to pray, and time to work”, you have serious issues. Maybe in the UK hard work doesn’t get you anywhere. Here in the USA you do not just make money based on your hard work, but it determines your place in society. If you are rich and lazy you are looked down upon. If you are poor, but work hard even the elites will respect you. My whole business is slanted to the American mindset. I can respect that it offends you, but flaming me on my own fan page is not something that is going to win me over to your side of the argument.
