Bits on the Run May be a Good Video Delivery Platform for Sophisticated Content Developers
I was talking to a CTO of a video distribution platform today and he asked how his system compared to Bits on the Run. I had looked at Bits on the Run last year when I was looking for a platform for Everyman IT and dismissed it as not being robust enough. Since it was brought up again I wandered back to their site to see what they are up to.
I was pleasantly surprised by their progress. Their platform looks to be much more feature rich and useful then it was last time I looked. They offer transcoding and multi bit rate support they way services such as Brightcove do, BUT they allow you connect with JW Player which gives you a huge amount of customization.
They now offer HTML support so your videos can be viewed on iPhone/Pad/Pod’s, and you only pay for what you use. They charge you a storage fee, and a delivery fee. It’s all per GB and the rate goes down as you buy more. The nice part with this is that you can actually buy $10 worth of service if that’s all you need.
It doesn’t look as point and click as Brightcove is so if you don’t know much about computers I would be cautious, but if you know a thing or two about HTML and web development it may be a great service.
They have a trial plan so that you can test out the system. Once I get done publishing the “Linux” track I will take a deeper look at Bits on the Run. Our co-location contract is expiring in a few months and if I can find a video delivery service I like I would like to switch over to one.
