Introduction to Website Administration

Synopsis:

This class provides students with a basic understanding of technology and systems involved with maintaining a website.

Prerequisites:

This class talks about:

  • The Difference Between the Internet and World Wide Web
  • DNS
  • Web Servers
  • HTML
  • Scripting Languages
  • Databases
  • Web Browsers
  • Web Design Tools

Class Notes:

  1. Introduction
    1. Web design is not difficult, but it takes more work than many people realize.
  2. The Basics
    1. The Internet is a global system for communication
    2. The World Wide Web is all of the web pages that reside on the Internet
    3. A Web Browser is used to view web pages
    4. W3C, or World Wide Web Consortium, creates standards for web browsers that programmers many times do not follow.
    5. HTTP is the protocol used to transmit web pages
    6. FTP is the protocol used to transfer files
    7. SMTP is the protocol used to send email
  3. DNS
    1. All computer require IP Addresses
    2. DNS Servers tell web browsers the IP Address for the website the user is trying to view.
    3. Computers understand IP Addresses, not Domain Names
  4. Web Servers
    1. Apache is for any Server
    2. IIS is for Windows Servers
    3. For Hosted Linux Capitalization is VERY important
  5. HTML
    1. Is a human readable language
    2. You can use Notepad to write HTML web pages
  6. Scripting Languages
    1. Are used to create Dynamic Web Pages
    2. PHP, ASP, CGI Scripts are Scripting Languages
    3. Your Server must support a scripting language for it to work.
  7. Databases
    1. MySQL is the most common database used for websites
    2. Databases are used to store data
    3. Are used to create  Dynamic Web Pages
  8. Web Browsers
    1. IE, Mozilla, Chrome
    2. Are supposed to conform to W3C, but many times don’t
  9. Web Design
    1. Websites can be created with something as inexpensive as Notepad, or as expensive as Dreamweaver.
    2. Microsoft Word and Google Docs can be used to create websites

    It doesn’t matter. You just have to pick the design software you like to use and see what operating systems they make it for.

    what i don’t understand is how do u create a website with ordinary notepad or microsoft without using application like dream weaver? again, i want to know if someone normally pays to have their designed website uploaded to the internet or the procedures to do that. thank u.

    It is a really good programm to learn about computer. i like to know , my e mail does not work.i cannot send and also receive mail. its windows vista 7 and it is winodws mail. pls tell me what do i do for it. i tried to set and follow all the instructions but did not work pls help me
