Class Notes

  1. Types of Backup
    1. Full – backup everything
    2. Incremental – backup everything since the last incremental backup
    3. Differential – backup everything since the last Full backup
    4. Rsync – backup the bits that have changed in the files
    5. Combined – modern backup software uses a combination of techniques
  2. Formats of Backup
    1. Compressed
    2. Bare Metal – allows you to recover not just files, but the entire operating system
    3. Readable
    4. Software Problems – not all backup software is made the same
  3. Media
    1. Online
    2. FTP
    3. Hard Drive
    4. Tape
    5. CD or DVD
    6. Flash Drive /External
    7. Offsite Backup is a good idea, but no one ever does it.
  4. Software
    1. Microsoft’s built in backup has a poor track record
    2. Server vs. Workstation – The software is different and the Server backup software costs around $600-$1000
    3. Add-ins – You may need special add-ins for your backup software to backup Microsoft SQL databases or Exchange servers.
  5. Online Backup Solutions
    1. Only backup files, does not do a “bare metal” backup
    2. It can take a long time to backup or recover data
